چکیده

Surface impedance is an important concept in classical wave systems such as photonic crystals (PCs). For example, the condition of an interface state formation in the interfacial region of two different one-dimensional PCs is simplyZSL þ ZSR 1⁄4 0, where ZSLðZSRÞis the surface impedance of the semiinfinite PC on the left-hand (right-hand) side of the interface. Here, we also show a rigorous relation between the surface impedance of a one-dimensional PC and its bulk properties through the geometrical (Zak) phases of the bulk bands, which can be used to determine the existence or nonexistence of interface states at the interface of the two PCs in a particular band gap. Our results hold for any PCs with inversion symmetry, independent of the frequency of the gap and the symmetry point where the gap lies in the Brillouin zone. Our results provide new insights into the relationship between surface scattering properties, the bulk band properties, and the formation of interface states, which in turn can enable the design of systems with interface states in a rational manner.

Efficient Analysis of Plasmonic circuits using Differential Global Surface Impedance (DGSI) Model

Differential global surface impedance (DGSI) model, a rigorous approach, has been applied to the analysis of three dimensional plasmonic circuits. This model gives a global relation between the tangential electric field and the equivalent surface electric current on the boundary of an object. This approach helps one bring the unknowns to the boundary surface of an object and so avoid volumetric...

A simple form of MT impedance tensor analysis to simplify its decomposition to remove the effects of near surface small-scale 3-D conductivity structures

Magnetotelluric (MT) is a natural electromagnetic (EM) technique which is used for geothermal, petroleum, geotechnical, groundwater and mineral exploration. MT is also routinely used for mapping of deep subsurface structures. In this method, the measured regional complex impedance tensor (Z) is substantially distorted by any topographical feature or small-scale near-surface, three-dimensional (...

First-principles study on the electronic structure of Thiophenbithiol (TBT) on Au(100) surface

First principle calculations were performed using Density functional theory within the local spin density approximation (LSDA) to understand the electronic properties of Au(100)+TBT system and compare the results with Au(100) and bulk Au properties. Band structure, the total DOS and charge density for these materials are calculated. We found that the HOMO for Au(100)+TBT becomes broader than Au...

Nodal-link semimetals

Topological phases of matter have been among the most active research subjects in condensed matter physics. They can be broadly classified as two major classes. The first class of phases, including topological insulators and superconductors[1–6], and other symmetry protected topological phases[7], have gapped bulks with nontrivial topological structures characterized by topological invariants[8...

Symmetry Protected Topological phases of Quantum Matter

We describe recent progress in our understanding of the interplay between interactions, symmetry, and topology in states of quantum matter. We focus on a minimal generalization of the celebrated topological band insulators to interacting many particle systems, known as Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phases. In common with the topological band insulators these states have a bulk gap and no...
